Panchakarma is the most eminent branch of Ayurved. The name panchakarma literally means “five Actions”. Panchakarma procedure is a five step process that detoxifies the human body and draws out the toxins accumulated over time due to poor habits, food choices, illness and environmental pollution. The method employed in panchakarma restore an individual’s natural healing capacity and improve the quality of life.
Panchakarma is more than a mere healing system. Before the actual operation of purification through Panchakarma steps begins, there is a need to prepare the body with prescribed methods to encourage it to let go of the toxins. Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment involves elaborated methods of purification to release stress.
Panchakarma treatment is a three-stage process -
• Purvakarma (pre-operative)
In this phase body and mind are prepared with various treatments for the cleansing. The treatment helps to dislodge deep rooted toxins and make them for elimination.
• Pradhanakarma (operative) and
Pancha means five and Karma means actions. There are the five cleansing treatment methods used for detoxification of the body and the doctor will decide which is the most suitable.
• Paschatkarma (post-operative) measures.
Post-therapeutic dietetics is designed to enhance and re-establish the digestive fire. Specially tailored diet is administered after the completion of the cleansing treatments to enhance the benefits of the Panchakarma and rejuvenation.

1. PURVA KARMA:
Purva Karma is a preliminary procedure that prepares the body for the cleansing and detoxifying Panchakarma treatment. It takes around three to seven days. At this stage, the body is prepared for treatment by loosening toxins and excess doshas. Purvakarma aims at softening the tissues so that the toxins deep-rooted in the tissues can be liquefied to be eliminated through the digestive system.
SNEHAN KARMA (OLEATION THERAPY)
Snehana karma is one of the poorvakarma of panchakarma treatment. Snehana is the karma which is done by sneha i.e. soft lubricating oily substance.
The purpose of snehana is the detoxification of body by lubrication of doshas .
Snehana classified into two types –
1. Sneha pana (Internal administration of sneha)
2. Bahya Snehana (External application of sneha)

The snehana procedures are used for
• Shodhana (purification purpose),
• Shamana (palliative purpose), and
• Brahmana(nourishing purpose).
1. The Snehapana – It is the internal administration of Sneha which are classified as.
a) Achcha Sneha - It uses pure Sneha without mixing with other medicated products.
b) Vicharana Sneha – In this karma Sneha can be mixed with other medicated products.
2. Bahya Snehana(external application of Sneha) is done through various modes like oil massage, oil bath, pouring oil in a specific manner, etc.

Swedana karma – Sudation Therapy
The word Sweda is derived from Sanskrit word “swid”, meaning ‘to sweat or to perspire’. Perspiration is one of the human metabolic process through which toxins excretes out of the body. It is a very natural process. This natural process is used medically for detoxification and purification of body by balancing the doshas. Swedana helps to open pores in the skin which will help to excrete out waste products in the form of sweat.
Types:
There are many types of Swedana which are explained in Charak Samhita chapter 14, but following two types are commonly used -
1. Bashpa Sweda
In this type of sweda person used to sit in the chamber where herbal medicated steam is released through boiling equipment.
2. Naadi Sweda
In this type of sweda penetrating heat is used which s given by tube method on complex structures of body like joints etc.
